Abstrakt: "Luke of Prague (ca. 1460–1528), bishop of the Unity of Brethren, is usually portrayed as the one who developed its theology, unified its liturgy and consolidated its organization. This paper portrays him as one who also did theology with his heart in his songs. Through the specific examples, it shows that Luke's hymns are not only an expression of his theological doctrine or a liturgical function, but also an expression of spiritual life. In Luke's hymnography we find the basic themes of his teaching and functional chants, as well as expressions of religious experience in a world full of suffering, evil, contradictions and ambivalences. Alongside the works of the Trinity – creation, redemption and salvation – the themes of faith, love and hope come to the fore in the hymns, as do other aspects of Man's relationship with God: wonder, doubt, indignation, a strong desire for inner enlightenment, transformation of the heart and union with Christ. Luke's hymns can thus also be interpreted as an expression of “mystical spirituality”. The key sources on which the study is based include Luke's liturgical book Zprávy při službách úřadu kněžského [Guidelines for priestly ministry] (1527) and his hymns published in several Brethren hymnals, especially in Piesně chval Božských (1541)."
