21 May 2025

Dear teachers, dear colleagues, dear students,

The coming May is traditionally the month of Rector's Day, which the faculty has used for years to organize a faculty trip. This year, the faculty leadership has agreed to allow students and staff to participate in a university-organized sports program, and the dean has declared a special dean's day for the faculty trip on Wednesday, May 21. The full university programme and schedule for the Rector's Day can be found here: https://rektorskyden.cuni.cz/RD-1.html

As for the dean's day, I would like to invite you all to a light hike in the Brdy hills. We will start from the train station in Dobřichovice and follow the blue and then the red trail to the Skalka hill. Along the way we would enjoy a beautiful view from the Hvíždinec hill and at Skalka we can enjoy the view to the opposite side from the lookout at the cross. Right next door is the Baroque complex of the monastery, the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, the hermitage and the Stations of the Cross, which was built around this important pilgrimage site in the 17th century with the participation of the famous architect Kryštof Dientzenhofer. You'll be able to complement your spiritual admiration with the physical delight of buns or other delicacies, which can be roasted on the public fireplace in the shade of the Baroque witnesses if you pack them to take along as a snack. If enough people are announced, we could also arrange for the lady who runs the refreshment shop at the spot to come and open for us. After we have exhausted our strength on the ridge, we can freely descend to Mníšek pod Brdy for a short tour of the town and especially for a longed-for late lunch in local restaurants. The total length of the route is about 10 km and does not require any special physical condition, it is an uncomplicated terrain.

The transport will be very easy this year, there is a train to Dobřichovice every quarter of an hour from Smíchovské nádraží, with every second train leaving from Prague Main Station. The journey takes about 20 minutes. The most convenient connection seems to be the 9:15 from Prague, Main Station (9:23 from Smichov). The return journey is again very easy. Buses from Mníšek to Prague run similarly often. Those who would like to enjoy a scenic trip through the Brda foothills and then through the Vltava valley can choose the less than an hour-long local train ride through Vrané nad Vltavou, Braník and Vršovice to the Praha, Main Station.

I hope that the weather will be good and that you will come in as large numbers as possible.

Looking forward to spending time together

Pavel Moskala
