The Department of Biblical Studies, established in 2025 by the merger of the Department of Old Testament and the Department of New Testament, focuses on the interpretation of the Bible/Scripture as an integral whole of the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible) and the New Testament. This focus encompasses a wide range of sub-disciplines from the philology and linguistics of ancient Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek and other languages, to the archaeology of the Southern Levant and the history of ancient Israel and Judah, the surrounding cultures and civilizations with their cultural heritage, to the detailed study of the Bible as a unique library of testimonies of "the People of the God", to the methodological issues of understanding these texts and the problems of their responsible interpretation (biblical theology).
The staff of the department also participates in the activities of the Centre for Biblical Studies of The Academy of Sciences and Charles University in Prague.
