Primary research focus: Pentateuchal studies and the Book of Exodus; history and literature of ancient Israel, hermeneutics in Biblical exposition, Old Testament theologies, and Rabbinic literature.


Currently holding the position of Vice-Dean for Doctoral Studies. Occasionally serving as a preacher for the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren.

  • 1981–1985 Grammar School in Rýmařov.

  • 1986–1994 Comenius Protestant Theological Faculty ( in 1990 renamed to Protestant Theological Faculty of Charles University), concluding with the Master's degree (Mgr).

    • 1989–1991 Military Service.

    • 1992–1993 German-funded programme Studium in Israel at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem (12 months).

  • 1994–1995 Jewish Studies at Wycliffe Hall, University of Oxford (Supervisor: Martin Goodman).

  • 1995–1996 Curacy for the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren, concluded with Ordination.

  • 1996–2000 Associate Pastor at the Vinohrady congregation of the ECCB.

  • 1995–2000 Doctoral studies at the Protestant Theological Faculty. Awarded Ph.D. degree based on the defence of the dissertation The Image of Rabbi Joshua ben Levi in the Talmuds and Midrashim: A Contribution to the Literary Analysis of Rabbinic Literature (Supervisor: Martin Prudký).

    • 1998–1999 Study of Jewish Studies at Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, Germany (3 months; Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Stefan Schreiner).

  • 2004–2005 Postdoctoral research fellowship at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, USA (10 months; Fulbright-Masaryk Scholarship; Host: Prof. Dr. William P. Brown).

  • 2014 Appointed as Associate Professor in Biblical Theology following the successful defense of the habilitation thesis The Function of History in 20th-Century Old Testament Theologies.

  • 2011–2021 Involvement in archaeological excavations in collaboration with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Khirbet Qeiyafa, 2011) and Tel Aviv University (Tell Azekah, 2014 and 2016; Tell Moza, 2020).

  • 2022 Appointed Vice-Dean for Doctoral Studies.
