Practical theology is a distinct theological discipline that examines the diverse areas of lived faith and Christian practice in today’s late modern world. It seeks to gain a deeper understanding of this practice—what takes place within it and why—and to engage with it in a creative and constructive way. It develops a form of theory that helps practitioners exercise their own judgment and make informed decisions in relation to present and future action. In doing so, it draws on insights from other theological disciplines as well as from non-theological fields within the humanities and social sciences.
The Department of Practical Theology at the Protestant Theological Faculty of Charles University focuses primarily on teaching and research in the fields of homiletics, liturgics, catechetics, poimenics, and diaconics. The department’s faculty members contribute to teaching in nearly all study programs at the faculty. They educate not only future theologians and pastors, but also pastoral, social, community, and crisis workers.
The head of the department also guarantees the study program Christian Crisis and Pastoral Work - Diaconia.
