ON THE PROPHETIC IMAGINATION, RHETORICS AND THE HOPE OF WALTER BRUEGGEMANN In this article the literary work of Walter Brueggemann is introduced, outlined and commented. It starts with a short profile of this American protestant Bible scholar of German descent. The influence of James Muilenburg, Gerhard von Rad, Hans Walter Wolff, Paul Ricoeur, Norman Gottwald and George Lindbeck is considered. In what follows, the key books written by Brueggemann are reviewed and put into a trajectory of Brueggemans intelectual pathway. Finally the ambiguous relation of Brueggemann to present State of Israel is interpreted as a part of his anti-establishment stance within the US context. |

NINETEEN THESES ON THE SCRIPTURE AS AN ALTERNATIVE SOCIAL SCRIPT These theses have been formulated by Walter Brueggemann as his contribution to the Emergent Theological Conversation Series in 2005. They develop the notion of humanistic psychotherapy that people are “scripted”, determined by their family and broader social and political contexts. The Scripture, on the other hand, presents a “counterscript” to this determination. The task of the church is to enable people to experience the change of their script, a re-determination, carried out by the Scripture. |

MOSES IN JOHN In the Fourth Gospel, Jesus is portrayed as the very revelation of God. This naturally leads to the issue of Jesus’ relationship to what so far had been established as a standard means of revelation – the Scripture or, more specifically, the Law. This issue may be abbreviated by the two names Jesus–Moses, as it is the case in the programmatic statement in the prologue: John 1:17. The present study tracks the development of this programme throughout the narrative body of the Gospel. There, references to Moses appear at rather important points: when the specifically Johannine concept of Jesus’ death as exaltation is explained by a reference to Old Testament „prototype“ (John 3:12–16) and when validity of Jesus’ word (John 5) and meaning of his deeds (John 6) is disputed. Implicitly, Jesus’ relation to the (Mosaic) Law of the Jews underlines the process before Pilate that leads to Jesus’ crucifixion. It is shown that for John, Jesus is not a second Mose, but – in a rather peculiar way – the realisation of the intention of the (Moses-given) Law. |

“THE MYTH OF THE ‘NONRELIGIOUS AGE’ ”. A SOCIOCULTURAL TRANSFORMATION OF RELIGION IN MODERNITY The article presents the critical factors of modernization from the sociological (bureaucracy, capitalism, technology, democratization and information media) and theological (loss of gratitude) point of view. It accesses to the deep social transformations in modernity in light of the religious subject which is not simply identical to the“ individual secularization”. The author finds the sociological model of secularization limited because this supposes an evolutionary model of history – like in the times of accepting of the secularization thesis. The article also opposes both the widespread conviction that there is a direct interconnection between secularization and the Enlightenment and the identification of modern times with dechristianization. |

DIVINE SUFFERING AND THE LAMB OF GOD – CHARLES HARTSHORNE AND PEACE THEOLOGY Does the process view of reality construing God’s activity in the world as non-coercive persuading correspond with the theology of nonviolence? The role of Jesus Christ in Charles Hartshorne’s thought may instigate such query. The theology of peace is stimulated by the conviction that“ the way of the cross” is not just a situational ethical strategy but a normative manner of living revealing the nature of the Creator’s own dealing with all creatures. Hartshorne himself was rather a defamer of pacifism and did not assume any such connectedness but some Hartshornian scholars argue for presenting his view as a metaphysical basis of Christian pacifism. One can also compare his conception with the views of those who anticipate a metaphysical ground of nonviolence regardless of process theism. There seems to be no conflict between the universal nature of the process world view and the particularity of the Christian experience. |
