POST-MODERN EASTER IN THE NEW TESTAMENT A consequential post-modern decomposition of Early Christian confessional formulae revealed a variety of post-Easter expressions of Christian faith. Even the baptismal legomenon about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (cf. Romans 6) is attested as as a combination of two principally independent meaningful statements: about his substitutional death (eucharistic tradition) and about his resurrection. However the finding about the variety of Early Christian expressions of faith has also its positive side. They all relate to Jesus and they all try to express his eschatologial significance. It follows that Easter faith cannot be interpreted as a consequence of an ideology, it rather reveals that the its origin must have been an event and that the early witnesses tried to verbalize it in various ways, on the basis of older traditions. The proclamation of Jesus’ resurrection became the leading one and integrated several of the other expressions. Discussed are the reasons why just this statement played the crucial role. |

THE LITURGICAL COMMEMORATION OF JAN HUS ABROAD: PAST AND PRESENT From the time of his death in 1415, Jan Hus has been venerated for his heroic faith by Christians both at home in the Czech lands and abroad. With the advent of the Second Reformation of the 16th century, much of what was written about Hus in Germany and England was intended to further the Reformation cause. Hus was held up as the virtuous man “martyred” by the agents of a wicked Roman church. Confessional lines were neatly drawn and Hus was made to stand on the side of the 16th century reformers even though he was completely out of place theologically in their midst. The renewed place given the commemoration of the communion of saints in Lutheran and Anglican churches during the latter part of this century has accorded Hus quite a different place in the life of these churches. Clearly placed in the context of the “great cloud of witnesses” Hus is allowed to be what he was - a Christian of heroic character, whose transparent goodness attracted to him followers of all classes and degrees and whose death for the renewal of the church won him the reverent devotion of succeeding generations. This transition from polemic to liturgical commemoration marks a significant development in the life of these churches and is, perhaps, proleptic of the place to be accorded Hus throughout the whole Church. |

THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT Jakub S. Trojan presents three motifs from the Sermon on the Mount which in his view contribute to a better understanding of the identity of the Reformed section of the ecumenical Christian family. Firstly he deals with a deeper understanding of the relationship between Scripture and tradition - an issue of importance in the dialogue particularly with the Roman Catholic view. Another aspect of the Sermon on the Mount Trojan is focusing on, is the relationship between faith and works, a classical concept of Pauline theological effort. In his reference to the paradigm of the Kingdom of God as the central category of the Sermon on the Mount, Trojan has attempted to come to grips with the issues relating sola fide in such a way as to strengthen the reformed identity for ecumenical dialogue. The closing paragraphs of Trojan’s study are focused on the Sermon on the Mount emphasis on our responsibility for the city, a responsibility that does not stop short at purely personal dimension of our faith. |
