Clearly and conscisely: on Calvin’s interpretation of the scripture One of the popular Calvin’s dicta is his maxim concerning interpretation of the Scripture: perspicua brevitas (lucid brevity). The present article surveys two of his writings where he develops his views of what should make a good Scripture commentary at some length: the prefaces to his first published exegetical work, commentary on Romans, and to the intended (however not realized) edition of Chrysostomus’ expositions. It attempts to determine the inner and deeper relationships of this seemingly simple and only practical conception and to distinguish Calvin’s approach from mere literalism. |

Law and narration in the Pentateuch The way in which the Old Testament is interpreted depends heavily on applied hermeneutics. The basic technique explained and elaborated in this essay is „foregrounding“, in which one genre is preferred to another. The main genres involved here are law and narration, both integral parts of the Torah and both interconnected. If ethics (i.e. law) is taken as the primary genre, as it is in the Jewish tradition, then the method of reading and understanding radically differs from a reading that lays stress on narration, which is more typical for the Christian tradition. In terms of the Pentateuch, this means that the Jewish interpretation emphasizes a halakhic reading of biblical narrations. Various stories are read in order to illuminate coherently the law and its importance for the daily life of Israel. Foregrounding narration, on the other hand, brings a different agenda: The same texts function as more or less universal instructions on how to search for existential truth and human authenticity. |

Analysis of the plot in the old testament narratives This study introduces three main models suitable for the analysis of the plot of the Old Testament narratives. The first is the „pediment structure“ (known often under the name „plot structure“). This model was originally developed by G. Freytag for the analysis of the classical drama. The second model is „beginning-middle-end“, simple model linked to Aristotle. The third model is the „sociolinguistic model“ of W. Labov. These three models are described, compared and applied to the Old Testament narratives. The potential and the limits of the applications is critically evaluated. If we work consciously with the limits of each of the models, the application of them to Old Testament narratives is fruitful and could serve the readers to be more accurate in exegesis and to appreciate the beauty, the dynamics and the depth of the Old Testament narratives. |

Process theism and moral philosophy Does modern commitment to the autonomy of human reason and experience disqualify any metaphysics and theism? In dialogue with classical and modern proposals, Franklin I. Gamwell (The Divine Good: Modern Moral Theory and the Necessity of God) agrees with Kant that there must be a ground for moral claims (amoralism is selfrefuting), but concludes that Aristotle is right in insisting that this ground must be teleological. This teleological ground, however, cannot be empirical (MacIntyre), but a priori or transcendental. Yet the basis of transcendental teleology cannot be any human consensus (Apel): it must be metaphysical. Exploiting the insights of Charles Hartshorne, the author concludes that the ground of metaphysical teleology must be neoclassical theism, where the ultimate metaphysical principle is creative synthesis, of which the maximal instance is divine relativity. Because of God’s allinclusive relation to reality it is the “divine good” that ultimately identifies the moral law. The author illustrates this conclusion with the example of the modern debate on political ethics. |

The article explores the semiotic concept of sign and its reception in liturgies. In the first part the author resumes some common concepts of sign in Catholic and Protestant theology and points out some of their problems. The second part deals with two semiotic conceptions of sign, the dyadic concept of F. de Saussure which influenced the cultural semiotics of U. Eco, and the triadie concept of C'h. S. Peirce. The third part presents main topics of the semiotic liturgies in Germany and Anglo-Saxon world, especially the respect for the various means of expression in liturgy, the question of meaning, the role of (confessional) code and the problem of transcendent reference in the secular world. The purpose of this essay is to emphasize that semiotics doesn’t provide only a set of analytical tools for exploring worship but also a specific epistemological model. In context of the Christian worship Peirce’s realism seems to be more plausible than Eco’s nominalist theory. It overcomes the problem of the ontological and conventional sign concept and leads to a conception of worship as semiosis at the edge of the known world. |
